Description

This list contains descriptions of estimates of the energy of the site, usually characterised by the sediments that are found.  Modified from Picton & Erwin, Guide to Inshore Marine Life, IMMEL Publishing 1987.

High

A high energy environment, usually bedrock and boulde rs with little or no sediment

Moderately high

Cobbles and occasional boulde rs on coa rs e sand.  Dense populations of sponges, sea squirts and hydroids

Mid-energy

Cobbles and occasional boulde rs on coa rs e sand or muddy sand.

Moderately low

Sand or fine gravel plains with sand waves

Low 

Low energy sites are characterised by a seabed of clay or fine sand
